Squeeze
Photographic lyrics, say what they see (a bit like Catchphrase). Sometimes slightly annoying lyrics but they are enduring, and have made some great melodies.

A bit of a gem of British music I think. Remember listening to them at college and that was 30 years ago. Maybe the English counterparts of the Americans' Pixies. Little valued, but a bigger contribution to popular music than often recognised.

Over to WHO.

Re: Squeeze
Bit like a late 70's early 80's Kinks only nowhere near as good. Engaging enough though.

Tilbrook and Difford are national treasures

Re: Squeeze
Difford & Tilbrook are really good songwriters. Squeeze sponsor our local non-league side Lewes FC, the mighty Rooks of the Ryman Prem. They're playing a gig Monday at Lewes Town Hall for 300 of the owners of the club (it's community owned). It's to celebrate 50 years since Pink Floyd played a gig at the same venue to raise money yo by the club floodlights. Should be great.

I take it Jools Holland is not involved anymore?

Actually his Autobiography is a decent read.

Re: Squeeze
Gilson Lavis, the original drummer, is in JH'S touring band. Difford/Tilbrook are the only original members I think.

Re: Squeeze
Never been to see them live BillyJenningsBoots, but if they came to Bournemouth I would go. I think they are one of these bands that play to small venues but future generations will discover them when they're long gone and think how they'd like to have seen them when they were still around.

"They do it down on Camber Sands, they do it at Waikiki
Lazing about this beach all day night, the crickets creepy.
Squinting faces at the sky, a Harold Robbins paperback
Surfers drop their boards and dry and everybody wants a hat. But behind the chalet, my holiday's complete
And I feel like William Tell, Maid Marian on her tiptoed feet."

"The case was pulled from under the bed.She made a call to a sympathetic friend and made arrangements. The door was closed there was a note. I couldn't be bothered. Maybe I'll choke. No more engagements. With where have you beens and faraway frowns, trying to be good by not being round. I had excuses those little boy lies, that she computed I had excuses those little boy lies
That she computed by watching my eyes and told me firmly. She couldn't stand it I'm bad on her heart. She dropped her makeup and I found the bar."

Lyrics that are easy to identify with, for me anyway lol.

Re: Squeeze
Gilson's a great drummer though must be getting on now. some of his horn players must have been in that band for near enough twenty years. he can't be a bad bloke to work for/with, and of course Rico was a key member

Also going to see them next month up here. A top Thursday night out with a few beers thrown in will make up for it being a non West Ham weekend :-)

Re: Squeeze
Difford and Tilbrook are up there with the great British songwriting partnerships. Perhaps only second to Lennon and Macartney.

Last time I saw them was a few years ago at the Hammy Odeon with my missus, who wasn't that fussed about them. Half way through the night she said she hadn't realised how many great songs they'd done. Says it all really. An often forgotten and underrated band.

Mr Debs is a big fan. I like a fair few of their songs. I.love the lyrics to Labelled With Love
